New Potter Bridge installation

I will miss capturing photos of different news events around Whatcom County for The Bellingham Herald when I start my new job at DB Skimboards / DB Longboards (although I am very excited to start the new job and focus on the boardsports I love). This was one of those types of assignments where I figured it would be a standard construction photo, but it turned into a video opportunity and I even got to interview the designer of the bridge. Senior Bridge Engineer Jiri Pertold, of David Evans and Associates, talked to me about the new Potter Road bridge and the installation of the new girders and how the bridge differs from the previous Potter Road bridge on Oct. 29, 2014. I also included a few photos from the day below.

Behind the scenes at the BP Cherry Point Oil Refinery

Over the years of exploring Whatcom County I have tried to get as close as possible to the BP Cherry Point Refinery to get some sort of captivating photo. I never had much luck… That all changed a few weeks ago. BP invited The Bellingham Herald for a tour of the facility and I was assigned as the photographer. BP spokesman Scott Dean Director of External Affairs at BP Cherry Point Bill Kidd guided us through the new 200-acre rail offloading facility and around the refinery. The video I created above features Director of External Affairs at BP Cherry Point Bill Kidd talked about the 200-acre rail offloading facility and the new safer rail cars that transport crude oil. The updated rail cars feature head shields on the end of the train cars, vent valve protection on top and bottom and feature thicker and stronger steal. Throughout the tour I was able to see the control room up close, the new features to increase the safety of oil train cars and the oil refining equipment up close. It was pretty cool to finally see the insides of the refinery before I leave my job at The Bellingham Herald for DB […]

Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy in Bellingham

Is this blog headline misleading? Yes. Did Bellingham resident Jonathan Lambert spend 45 hours creating an amazing 9-foot Groot Halloween costume? Yes. “The costume took about 45 hours to make and I used styrofoam, super glue, duct tape and plaster to create it,” Jonathan said. He even won the Halloween costume contest and $250 at the Royal on Halloween. I met with Jonny at Uisce in Bellingham and followed him around downtown making stops at the Wild Buffalo, Bobs Burgers and Brew and Glow. We even rode in an elevator at one, which was impressive considering Jonny was about 9-feet tall in the costume.

Whatcom County Football Preview Portraits

Been kinda busy hunting for apartments in Seattle, buying a new car and preparing for the new job at DB Skimboards/DB Longboards, but I need to catch up on some blog posts. I also redid my website over the course of the weekend. I have really enjoyed my time capturing football photos this season thus far and before the season began I had the opportunity to meet some of the players. I spent a week capturing portraits of Whatcom County high school football players for the 2014 Bellingham Herald Football Preview section. I also ended up designing the cover of the special section also (you can see that above). Below you can see some of the portraits that ran inside the special section.

Photos: Bellingham Bells win the WCL Championship

I have been capturing photos of the Bellingham Bells baseball team all summer for The Bellingham Herald. Last season the team won the West Coast League Championship beating the Corvallis Knights 3-2. The Bells finish the season 41-18, the best record in Bells history and the fourth time in WCL history that a team reached 40 wins. It was a fun season to capture photos of and I learned a lot about how to capture baseball. Here’s some photos from the championship game. You can view the full photo gallery here: CLICK HERE And you can read the full story here: CLICK HERE The Bellingham Herald also put together a photo page featuring my photos from over the course of the season that you can see below.

Lynden Rodeo Photos

I have never captured photos of a rodeo before, but that all changed this week when I was sent to the Northwest Washington Fair in Lynden, Washington for The Bellingham Herald. Due to an early deadline I was only able to capture photos of the first 30 minutes. You can view the full photo gallery here at The Bellingham Herald and a few below: Photo Gallery

Luke Ridnour Basketball Camp

I had the opportunity to capture photos for The Bellingham Herald of Orlando Magic point guard’s Luke Ridnour’s basketball camp in Blaine, Washington. Ridnour grew up in Blaine and has played for multiple NBA teams ranging from the Sonics (RIP) to the Minnesota Timberwolves over his 12-year career. It was fun to meet him and watch how excited the kids were to be at the camp. You can read the full story here: FULL STORY And you can view all the photos here: PHOTO GALLERY Video:
