I have been to La Push so many times to go surfing over the years and have never been able to convince my surf buddies to take a detour to the Hoh Rainforest. That being said, I made a special trip to the Olympic Peninsula to finally take in the old growth and nature.
I live in the Fremont Neighborhood of Seattle, so I have captured a couple photos of a troll in the past. With that being said I was excited to hear about Thomas Dambo’s “Northwest Trolls: Way of the Bird King” art installation coming to the Pacific Northwest. These art pieces are created out of recycled materials, which makes them even cooler in my opinion. That being said here are some photos of the Northwest Trolls. The Ballard Troll in front of the Nordic Museum The West Seattle Troll at Lincoln Park – Brun Idun Bainbridge Island Troll – Pia The Peacekeeper Here’s some video on my Instagram account as well.
“It’s all about peace, love and positivity.” – Logic I have been capturing photos of live music for over 15 years and Logic at WAMU Theater is in my top 3 shows ever. Naturally I love listening to an MC who loves Star Wars, sci-fi, and feelings. The show had it all ranging from a unique stage design, crowd interaction, and comedy. Someone even proposed in the crowd and Logic mixed up the lyrics of the song Everyday to celebrate. I even bought a tour t-shirt, which was a first for me. You can see some of my photos below and more at Do206 and Do503.
Spring in Seattle is beautiful. The pink colorful version comes in small waves though with the plum blossoms going first, then the cherry blossoms at the Quad at UW, and then the rest of the neighborhood trees showing off their spring colors. Here are a few of my favorite spring colors in Seattle photos.
Each year in December the King Tides return in the Pacific Northwest and slight flooding of our shoreline appears. King tides occur when the orbits and alignment of the Earth, moon, and sun combine to produce the greatest tidal effects of the year. This year was no different and I ventured out to Alki Beach Park in West Seattle to capture some photos you can see below. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Matt McDonald (@equalmotion)
The first movie I remember seeing was Empire Strikes Back and I recall my tiny brain being blown by the fact a tiny green dude was the master Luke was looking for. From that point on I have always been a fan of Yoda and he is my all-time favorite character. I even refer to him as pop culture Buddha sometimes. When the Mandalorian came on the scene and Grogu was introduced that childhood joy returned and I really dove into creating art around the two characters for some toy promos and for the ToyPhotographers.com website. Take a look at some of my favorite creations below and stay tuned for more!
I started noticing wildfire smoke in the skyline in Bellingham in 2011. It was just a little bit of haze at that point from a massive wildfire in Siberia. Over the years the wildfire smoke has gotten worse from fires in British Columbia and California. By 2016, nearly every summer had pretty bad wildfire smoke for a week or two. In 2022, the wildfire smoke is due to a fire on this side of the mountains the Bolt Creek Fire, and Seattle has been covered in smoke for over a month. On October 16th, 2022 it was nearly 80 degrees in Seattle and the smoke was so thick you could see shadows from it under the Aurora Bridge, which was a first. As a former photojournalist who still enjoys documenting the world around me I have been capturing photos each smoke season in Seattle and you can see some of them below. I am not happy about this new normal on the west coast and really hope somehow this trend gets reversed, but that might be reckless optimism on my behalf.
I have had Port Towsend on my mind for the past couple of months and I got to see all the hard work pay off last weekend at @THINGnw. I helped promote the festival via @Do206, built the THING website, and even ran socials for the festival for a bit. Excited to see what @stgpresents has in store next. AND I also launched the new The Swan Hotel Port Townsend website Tuesday. Here are some photos looking back at last weekend in Port Townsend. I started making May the Fourth be with you content for fun a few years back and now I am creating small marketing campaigns for Star Wars Day each year. It’s a fun way to get creative, to say the least. My first creation was making an animation of the Space Needle using one of my time lapses. From there I have created all kinds of content like Yoda enjoying pizza and beer to celebrate and unraveling a mandarin orange using the force. And the past two years I have created fun photos with Grogu with my dogs and created a little story to go around it on the Toy Photographers website. The Seattle burger joint Dicks even featured one of my photos. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Dick's Drive-In Restaurants (@dicksdrivein) The Seattle Times featured my Amazon Death Star photo even. I have really enjoyed this process of working with toys to create organic marketing photos that spread through social media to help promote a product, movie, or TV show. If you are interested in finding a unique way to promote your business don’t hesitate to reach out.
It started snowing in Seattle the day after Christmas and the snow did not clear for over a week. Since I am living on the border of Wallingford and Fremont each day I took a walk through the neighborhoods with my camera and my trusty photo assistance Charlie. Since I didn’t do a blog post from the Feb snow storm in Seattle I also included some of those photos below. Take a look at the photos of Seattle covered in the snow below and enjoy!
