Seattle Ballooning’s Hot Air Balloon Spectacular

For the first time in Seattle history, six towering 100-foot-tall hot air balloons glowed beneath the Space Needle, and I captured some of the magic for Do206.com. The Seattle Ballooning’s Hot Air Balloon Spectacular took place on Sunday, June 22, at dusk on the International Fountain Lawn at Seattle Center. Here are a few photos photo I captured from the event and I hope they bring this back next year.

Basecamp and Pacific Edge Adventure Photoshoots in Seabrook

I have been surfing, skimboarding and going the Washington coast since I was a kid. When Basecamp and Pacific Edge Adventure reached out for me to come capture some photos at Seabrook I was quite excited. I captured photos of people surfing, biking and all the coast for the two businesses to entice to people to go on an adventure. You can see some of the photos I captured here and how their marketing team is putting them to work.

Thunderstorms Roll Through Seattle

My experience of the thunderstorm last night in Seattle. I really should have worn rain pants and I am pretty excited that hail the size of golf balls did not spoil the lightning capture party. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Matt McDonald (@equalmotion)

Spring Colors in Seattle

I love capturing those pretty pink petals around Seattle once spring arrives and the cherry and plum blossoms bloom. This year was no different. I found some new pretty sidewalks to capture and even had a chance to capture some 1 + minute long exposure photos of cherry blossoms.

Toy Photography Fun with Super7

I love macro photography and toys have been a great subject to capture. I recently captured some photos of Super7 Toys for the ToyPhotographers.com website that was a lot fun. You can see a few photos and a stop-motion animation I created below.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Matt McDonald (@equalmotion)   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Matt McDonald (@equalmotion)

Fun with Fungi: Mushrooms and Toy Photography

One of the reasons I love macro photography is because it is a glimpse into a whole new world. This autumn I have been capturing more macro photos of mushrooms after a photo trip to the Hoh Rain Forest. As of late, I have been putting toys into macro mushroom scenes with the concept of “put a toy on it.” Similar to the “Put a Bird On It” skit on the television show Portlandia. Here are a few of the mushroom toy photos I captured this autumn around Seattle and the San Juan Islands.

Excellent Adventure With Bill And Ted

Bill and Ted always said “Be excellent to each other” and I sure would like to see more and hear more of that in our present-day world. Each year I celebrate Bill & Ted Day (June 9th) with a photo or two of Bill & Ted action figures/minifigures in hopes that it might spark a bit of joy hoping people will be kinder to each other. Our culture is sure to be obsessed with dystopias rather than utopias. One of the last mainstream English-speaking culture movies to feature a utopia is Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure in 1989. Maybe my love of the dudes Bill and Ted as a child has given me too much hope that we will have a utopian future with rad waterslides and epic music. By all means, it is good to recognize what is happening in the world and be aware of the chance of a dystopian future. As a culture, we could spend a lot less time thinking about gloom and doom and start imagining a better future like the Solar Punk movement and be excellent to each other.

Adventures with NECA’s Usagi Yojimbo Action Figure

Over the past couple of years, I have gotten very into the comic books of Stan Sakai and the award-winning rabbit ronin, Usagi Yojimbo. The Samurai rabbit was always my favorite guest star on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (sorry, Genghis and Metalhead, you are great characters as well). I introduced the kids to Usagi in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon and naturally, they loved him. From I went out and picked up a Usagi action figure from NECA and some comic books. Here’s our photo journey with Usagi so far!

Thanks for everything Pete Carroll

Thanks for everything Pete Carroll! A few photos I captured on the sideline of the winningest coach in Seahawks history who led the Hawks to the Super Bowl title. He will not be returning as the coach in 2024, but is staying on as a team advisor.  Also, Seattle artist Rudy Willingham put together an amazing tribute to Pete Carroll using 150 pieces of gum. I will now refer to it as the Pete Carroll Seattle Gum Wall going forward. Last, but not least a big thanks to Pete for reposting my photo before the 2014 Super Bowl. My photo went on to represent the Seahawks in the Super Bowl on Good Morning America and is still one of my more popular prints.

My Favorite Photos of 2023

My favorite photos I captured from 2023. Spring rain at the Quad – Thanks to my fisheye lens I was able to capture a new reflection photo at the quad. Usagi – This photo took much prep time and execution and was one of the most complex composites I have ever created. I love Usagi the character and this photo. Thunderpussy at Bumbershoot. A walk through the Hoh Rainforest’s Hall of Mosses in the fall. MLB All-Star Drone show – Way better than expected. Goth Babe at @capitolhillblockparty. Grogu riding @leotheninjadog for my annual May The 4th Be With You photo. Fog rolling through Seattle. Self-portrait of me longboarding down a colorful street in the spring. Fake Matt Hassleback taking out fake Russell Wilson at @bumbershootofficial.
