The year 2018 has come and gone and was quite the adventure for me in Seattle. New business, new clients, more video work than ever, and some really exciting photo assignments along the way. Most of the photos below were captured on my own time because I love photography. I enjoy trying out new concepts while also capturing those familiar beautiful Pacific Northwest scenes I love. Here’s my top 10 favorite photos of the year.
The Ferry Ride
I have captured a lot of ferry photos in the Pacific Northwest throughout my life. This one is by far and away the most popular. It got over 1,450 likes on my measly Instagram account, made it to the front page of Reddit, and was shared around quite a bit. All those ferry photos paid off. Now I just need to get this at sunset or sunrise…
Pearl Jam
Via Do206 I was able to secure a photo pass for the first Pearl Jam Home Show at Safeco Field. Middle school me rocking out to a Pearl Jam cassette never ever would have dreamed I would have had this opportunity. It was an amazing experience to say the least and for a good cause. More photos from the night HERE.
Space Needle In The Fog
Every couple years the fog stacks up perfectly around sunset for a one of a kind photo. I drove to Kerry Park first and could not see anything and then made it across town to Capitol Hill, and got the final hint of color from the day. More photos from that foggy week HERE.
Bumblebee
Yep. A toy photo is in my top 10. Keep in mind these aren’t my most popular photos, these are my favorite photos. I have loved Transformers since I was a kid, but the main reason this photo is listed is because it’s a 3-minute exposure using 3 flashes, and also is a composite of two photos. I don’t own two of the same Transformers and had no other choice than to do a composite. The whole thing was a learning experience and it turned out great in my opinion. This is something I always wanted to try and I look forward to working with real people in 2019 with what I learned from the project.
Sasquatch Sunset
I was very lucky to attend the last Sasquatch! Music Festival EVER thanks to Adam Zacks and Do206. I have been to a decent amount of shows at the Gorge, but the sunset on Friday night of Sasquatch! was one of the best I have ever seen. More photos from Sasquatch! 2018 HERE.
A Hump Back Whale Says Hi In Maui
My wife Alyne and I went to Maui for our honeymoon in February. I wanted to go whale watching, she wanted to go snorkeling. The concierge at the hotel said there was a good chance we would see whales while snorkeling, so we went that route. IT WAS MAGICAL. the other whale watching cruises barely saw any whales and we witnessed one breach right in front of us. Capturing this photo while on a boat with a bunch of people was a challenging, but it all worked out. I hope to finish my blog post about the trip. You can see more photos and read about our Honeymoon HERE.
Mt Rainier Paddler
I usually at least have my Nikon D500 with an 18-300mm lens when I walk Charlie my dog. Boy was a I glad I had it with me for this photo as we were walking though Centennial Park. You could see a seal peaking it’s head out of the water to figure out what was going on also.
Sun-flare Kerry Park
I have taken so many photos at Kerry Park I barely know what to do with them now. I was hoping for a nice foggy sunrise, but it didn’t work out, so I put the camera at f22 and shot into the sun. Luckily a crow flew by and I ended up with a unique photo I have never captured before.
Paul Allen Seattle Skyline
I took my dog for a walk in Queen Anne and noticed as it got darker the Space Needle appeared to be blue and had a 12 flag on top. I furiously drove to Kerry Park, The Amazon Domes, and then West Seattle to capture the Seattle cityscape dressed in blue to honor Paul Allen. You can view more photos from that night HERE.
Leavenworth Sledding
I had never been to Leavenworth during the winter until 2018. I was missing out on a legit winter wonderland. It’s an absolutely beautiful place covered in snow and this photo of kids sledding along the main street of town was my favorite. I actually ended up writing a full guide to Leavenworth you can view HERE.
Top Time-Lapse Videos Of The Year
I tend to capture quite a few time-lapse videos of Seattle each year for b-roll and because it’s fun. Above you can see a round up of my favorite sequences of 2018.
