Motocross in Bellingham

I had the opportunity to capture motocross photos for the first time at the Hannegan Speedway in Bellingham. I was only able to photograph two of the races, but it was a fun and challenging thing to shoot. Here’s a couple of my favorite photos and you can view the whole gallery HERE.

Portland, Seattle and Tacoma cityscapes

I made the trip down to Portland with my girlfriend Alyne to get away for the weekend and I thoroughly pondered not taking a camera with me. Alyne said “you know you will regret if you don’t bring a camera” and she was right. In-between eating at Voodoo Donuts and sampling some beer at Deschutes Brewery I took a little bit of time to capture a long exposure photo of Hawthorne Bridge and the Portland cityscape over the Wilamette River. Portland Cityscape: Buy a print Hawthorne Bridge: Buy a print I also made the trip down to Tacoma this week to meet with the DB Skimboards guys to talk about some upcoming projects. The view of Mt Rainier was so clear that day I had to take a few photos and the one below is from Ruston Way. Mount Rainier over Tacoma: Buy a print On the way back to Bellingham I made a stop at Kerry Park in Seattle and also captured a few photos of the Seattle skyline with Mt Rainier in it. Seattle cityscape: Buy a print here Gotta love summers in the Pacific Northwest and I am glad I still have over a month left of […]

World Cup Soccer at the Copper Hog in Bellingham

The Bellingham Herald sent me to the Copper Hog to capture photos of locals watching the U.S. v. Germany World Cup soccer game Thursday morning. Over 100 people showed up at the Copper Hog to watch the game and the restaurant/bar was full of all kinds of soccer fans. Although the U.S. lost to Germany 1-0 the U.S. still moved on to the knockout round of 16, so soccer fans celebrated and continued to day drink. You can view all the photos by CLICKING HERE and read the story by Dave Gallagher by CLICKING HERE. A lone Germany soccer fan watches the U.S. v. New York City: Brooklyn Photography

I spent 10 days exploring New York and my time spent in Brooklyn was easily the highlight of the trip. The area is very hip and most would say it is dominated by hipsters, but I would like to think the area is full of young people creating and experimenting with art, business, music, food and theatre that gives the area such an inspiring/trendsetting feel. It was my first time to New York and I stayed with my brother Tom and his roommates Tori, Rachel and Maggie, at their house in Brooklyn. His house is in the Bushwick area, which is in the northern part of the New York City borough of Brooklyn. The area kinda reminds me of a much larger, more diverse Bellingham, which is rapidly changing. As the rent in most areas like Williamsburg, Brooklyn have skyrocketed, young people have been begun to retreat deeper along the L Train subway line to Bushwick area from what I was told while I was visiting. Now the prices in Bushwick are rising also, so people have to move further down the subway line since it is more affordable. Bushwick has changed a lot over the past decade. According to […]

Ski to Sea Preview: Racer portraits

I was given the task to create some portraits for the Ski to Sea special section that The Bellingham Herald puts out each year. I used a ring flash and a random wall in the basement of The Bellingham Herald building to create all of these portraits. I also had a bunch of photos from last year’s race run in the special section and will be back up on the mountain covering the cross country and downhill legs of the race again this year.

New York City: The High Line Photos

I spent 10 days in New York and one of my favorite experiences was walking the High Line. The High Line is a 1-mile New York City linear park built on a 1.45-mile section of the elevated former New York Central Railroad spur called the West Side Line, which runs along the lower west side of Manhattan; it has been redesigned and planted as an aerial greenway. A similar project in Paris, the 3-mile Promenade plantée, completed in 1993, was the inspiration for this project. The High Line currently runs from Gansevoort Street, three blocks below West 14th Street, in the Meatpacking District, to 30th Street, through the neighborhood of Chelsea to the West Side Yard, near the Javits Convention Center. Formerly the viaduct of the High Line went as far south as Spring Street just north of Canal Street, but the lower section was demolished in 1960. Photos captured on the High Line in New York City by Matt McDonald from Bellingham, Washington. All photos are availble for prints and exclusive commercial photo use. Bellingham Snowpocalypse 2014

It wasn’t really a snowpocalypse, but the snow is always a story. I spent pretty much 16-hours outside the past two days capturing the snow storm in Bellingham for The Bellingham Herald. Sledding, snowboarding, car accidents, snow men, kayaks and more were some of the images I tried to capture. You can see more of my photos along with fellow photojournalist Philip A. Dwyer’s work in the following to links: Snow photos day 1: Click Here Snow photos photos day 2: Click Here My favorite part is the early morning when the sound is deadened by the snow and there is no one around. These are a few of those “moments” that I captured Monday morning before work. Anyways, snowpocalyse 2014 is coming to a close and it was pretty entertaining.

Just launched the new Summer Meltdown Festival website

I just launched the new Summer Meltdown Festival website (SummerMeltdownFest.com) this morning. The website design comes from Andy and Lindsay at Blank Design Studio, but I I did the back-end coding and a vast majority of the photos I captured the past two years. Summer Meltdown is the largest locally-produced independent camping and music festival in the Pacific Northwest. Nestled at the foot of majestic Whitehorse Mountain in the heart of the Cascade Mountains in Darrington, Washington, the festival is held each August and features over 30 bands on three stages over three days, the Green Village showcasing environmental and social outreach, food, craft and retail vendors, a Kids’ Area, Kids’ Parade, the Little Seahorse Music Academy and more. Make sure to checkout the new website: SummerMeltdownFest.com and below are the promo photos I captured of the festival.
