Bald Eagles on Alki Beach in West Seattle

Yesterday I made the trip out to West Seattle to skimboard with some of the guys at DB Skimboards and capture some photos. Part way through the skimboard session I saw two eagles snacking on something along the tide line. I snagged my 70-200mm lens and and waited for something to happen. Kayakers would stop by and take photos of the pair of eagles. One of the Eagles flew away, so I went back up to the boardwalk and walked around to the other side of the eagle in an attempt to get the Space Needle in frame also. I waited in the sand focused on the eagle for about 25 minutes until it finally took off. The wait was worth it and you can see a couple of my favorite photos below. Thanks to King 5 News for featuring my photos also in a gallery HERE Kiro 7 News (I used to be an intern there) for doing a gallery also HERE and LiveWashington on Instagram. This is a great example of being in the right place at the right time and I love bald eagles, the Space Needle and ferries, so I am really happy I had the […]

Northwest Trail Series Bridgepins Race

Another Duck Pucks NW Trail series is in the books. People traveled as far from Pennsylvania for this most excellent event (it’s true kinda). Longboards were ridden, I believe people ate cheeseburgers after and only roughly 10 bicyclist were angered by having to share the trail with skateboarders. People are more than welcome to repost these photos, but please give photo credit to @equalmotion (on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc) if you repost the photo. Here’s the top 5 riders: 1. Rain Daley 2. Devon Dotson 3. Adam Little 4. Ryan Villa Thanks to Bradley Cameron for organizing this one again. If you don’t know much about longboarding, but want to learn more about it and live in the Seattle area make sure to stop by Motion Boardshop. The friendly and knowledgeable staff will take care of you for sure. I ran out of time editing photos, so if you were racing and didn’t see one of you I can try and track one down just shoot me an email at matt@equalmotion.com If you are looking for more of my skate photos make sure to checkout DB Longboards, Cloud Ride Wheels and Atlas Trucks websites.

Seattle Spring: University of Washington Cherry Trees

I have always seen photos of the Quad at the University of Washington and due to traveling in the spring in the past have never got a chance to see it or photograph it until this year. I ventured to the University of Washington during a busy late winter day to get a lay of the land and checkout some photo options and snapped a few photos. People were everywhere taking selfies and the lighting was harsh, so I planned on getting there at sunrise the following weekend in hope of finding better light and less people. I showed up a 7am on a Sunday and there were about 12 other photographers there and a King 5 news crew (I was the photographer with long hair and a beard on the morning news that day) there capturing the morning spring scene. Unfortunately the sun never came out that morning, but I still got some great photos that I have always wanted to capture and even one that might be print worthy for my own wall. Anyways, I hope you enjoy my photos below and all of these photos are available for print and commercial use. Prints are available along with […]

Manatee Commune live at Nectar in Seattle

I have had the pleasure of watching and listening Grant Eadie aka the electronic artist Manatee Commune grow as a musisican over the past couple year and it has been amazing how far his music has come. Manatee Commune plays multiple instruments on stage and then loops all the audio to create full songs as a one man band. Last night I had ventured to Nectar Lounge in Seattle to watch Manatee Commune live for the first time in over a year and he was on point. I told my girlfriend before the show “I was only going to take three photos” and that didn’t happen because I ended up capturing several photos and making a montage edit to one of my favorite songs on the new Thistle EP “Simple Lessons”.

Capturing the Seattle Central Library

The Seattle Central Library is one of my favorite places to go on a rainy day in Seattle. Wandering and looking at new books and examining the architecture of the building is a super fun way to spend an afternoon. Central Library features a contemporary look and feel that is innovative in both form and function. Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas and former Seattleite Joshua Ramus were principal designers on the project, working closely with the Library’s board, staff and the public during its development phase. They did an amazing job. After visiting the library a couple times I had to go back with my camera and my girlfriend Alyne since she never had the opportunity to see the library before. Here’s a few photos from our most recent trip to the library. I encourage everyone to go for the books and the art that is the building. You will not be disappointed.

Seattle Sunrises: Queen Anne and the Space Needle

I usually always wake up before sunrise and at least lookout the window to see if there are any colors emerging in the sky. Although I wanted to go back to sleep this morning I ventured outside to snap a few photos of the pink clouds hovering above the Space Needle and Queen Anne Hill. I liked both of the vertical photos I captured quite a bit and messed around with combining them in Photoshop. I also captured an in-camera double exposure this morning. It’s always fun to nerd out for an hour on photos and that is exactly what I did here. Prints are available along with commercial licensing. You can purchase prints of my photos, cell phone cases, t-shirts, bags and even shower curtains on my FineArtAmerica account here: Fine Art America Prints Follow along on: Instagram Twitter Facebook Tumblr

Ken Griffey Jr. 24 Space Needle Photo goes viral

Welp. I was not anticipating that at all. I did not plan on taking a photo of the Space Needle yesterday and I did not plan on a photo going even more viral than my foggy Space Needle photo before the Super Bowl last year. I was driving home from the the DB Longboards / DB Skimboards shop Wednesday from Tacoma evening and I received a tweet from my friend Mary: .@equalmotion @mattsadventure have you taken a photo of #24 #GriffeyHOF Flag on the Spaceneedle yet? All the ones I've seen aren't so good 😊 — mary d (@marrdozilla) January 7, 2016 I drove a little bit faster in hopes of capturing the last light of the day. I made it home and was not very satisfied with the photo and only posted it to Twitter. And that is where it all started. The Space Needle retweeted me, then the Mariners, then Sportscenter, CBS Sports, Bleacher Report and other media news outlets. The Mariners and Macklemore posted it on Instagram and then CNN contacted me to ask if it were be possible to air my photo in their newscast and they did along with it showing up on other networks […]

New Years In Seattle: Space Needle Fireworks Show Photos

I captured photos of the Space Needle at midnight in 2015 and really wanted to capture a time-lapse video from the same location in 2016 along with capturing portraits of the Space Needle. To do this I setup three cameras one shooting vertical portraits and two other cameras (one with a 300mm lens and the other with a 100mm lens). I setup all three cameras to shoot every 10 seconds and here are the final results. The Seattle cityscape treated me very well in 2015 and I am very excited to start capturing photos in 2016. My first gig of the year will be shooting TJ Miller from HBO’s Silicon Valley to kick off the Leafly Comedy tour at the The Crocodile in Seattle for Do206. The Space Needle was magenta last night due to T-Mobile sponsoring the fireworks show I believe and I captured a few photos of that after sunset without the fireworks to add to my Space Needle photo collection. After hitting up a few parties I ventured back to my apartment where I had my three tripos setup on the roof to capture the fireworks show. Below you can see my favorite photos and the full […]
