Relive the 4th of July in Whatcom County

It’s July 5th and my hand hurts from shooting so much video and photos for work and personal stuff yesterday. I started out at the Blaine’s Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration to capture the parade and car show. You can see video of both below. Pretty much quick raw edits to give you an idea of what happened. Car show video: Parade video: You can see my photos that ran in the paper below and you can see all the photos from the parade by CLICKING HERE. After that I drove back to Bellingham attended a BBQ, ate a meal of food and then went up to Sehome hill to capture the fireworks. You can see that video here and a few photos below: Now that I am done with this blog post I am off to Locust Beach to take photos of a post 4th of July beach cleanup.

2013 Ski to Sea Race

Yesterday I covered the cross country and downhill legs of the 2013 Ski to Sea Race for The Bellingham Herald. It was my first time covering the two legs that take place at Mt Baker Ski area at the beginning of the race. Luckily I had Ron Lang of Mt Baker Ski Area to take me around on a snowmobile to get the shots I need of all the action. Since it was raining heavily certain areas of the cross country leg were quit slick. I noticed from afar cross country skiers falling in one section, so I ran over there to get the shot. That photo landed on the front page of The Bellingham Herald you can see above. It was raining so hard that even with rain gear my on my Nikon D3 and Cannon 5D both cameras stopped working about an hour into the race. Luckily I packed a Nikon 7100 and a 50mm lens in my camera backpack and was able to finish shooting the race. Below are a few more photos from The Bellingham Herald’s photo gallery. You can view all the photos here and view all of the Herald’s Ski to Sea coverage at […]

Alabama Street fire in Bellingham

As a staff photographer at The Bellingham Herald I never know when I am going to get called into work. Last night I was called in to take photos of a fire off Alabama Street in Bellingham. It was an abandoned house and no one was injured, but it served as a great practice for myself for future breaking-news events. I really enjoy covering breaking news because you never know what you are getting into and trying to capture a quality photo is a challenge. For these photos I used my Cannon 5D and a 50mm lens. If you like lemons or the color yellow, you will love these photos

On Saturday I decided I was going to give my new Nikon D7100 a test run with the 105mm macro lens. I setup a real basic mini-photo studio with a few flashes and ran through a bunch of different angles to attempt and capture the essence of a lemon. Here’s the photos I got. All photos copyright of Matt McDonald. All photos are available for prints and for commercial use.
