Behind the scenes at the BP Cherry Point Oil Refinery

Over the years of exploring Whatcom County I have tried to get as close as possible to the BP Cherry Point Refinery to get some sort of captivating photo. I never had much luck… That all changed a few weeks ago. BP invited The Bellingham Herald for a tour of the facility and I was assigned as the photographer. BP spokesman Scott Dean Director of External Affairs at BP Cherry Point Bill Kidd guided us through the new 200-acre rail offloading facility and around the refinery. The video I created above features Director of External Affairs at BP Cherry Point Bill Kidd talked about the 200-acre rail offloading facility and the new safer rail cars that transport crude oil. The updated rail cars feature head shields on the end of the train cars, vent valve protection on top and bottom and feature thicker and stronger steal. Throughout the tour I was able to see the control room up close, the new features to increase the safety of oil train cars and the oil refining equipment up close. It was pretty cool to finally see the insides of the refinery before I leave my job at The Bellingham Herald for DB […]

Football Thriller: Blaine v. Sehome

There was one heck of a football game Sept. 26, 2014 at Civic Stadium in Bellingham. It looked like Sehome was going to run away with the game, but that’s not how it all played out. Blaine made one heck of a comeback and took the win in the 4th Quarter. Here’s some words by The Bellingham Herald sports editor Dave Rasbach… There’s no disputing the raw speed of Sehome junior Taylor Rapp, but as quick as he is, he wasn’t the fastest thing on the Civic Stadium turf on Friday, Sept. 26. That honor belongs to the emotional roller coaster Blaine receiver Anthony Ball was on in the closing minutes of the Class 2A/3A Northwest Conference game between the Mariners and Borderites. With about two minutes remaining in regulation and his team trailing by six points, Ball broke behind the Sehome defensive backfield, hauled in a pass from quarterback Nathan Kramme and was running seemingly unchallenged toward the end zone and a 67-yard touchdown that would have tied the game and given his team a chance to take the lead with an extra point. Just a split second later, Ball’s dreams were dashed when Rapp refused to give up […]

Whatcom County Football Preview Portraits

Been kinda busy hunting for apartments in Seattle, buying a new car and preparing for the new job at DB Skimboards/DB Longboards, but I need to catch up on some blog posts. I also redid my website over the course of the weekend. I have really enjoyed my time capturing football photos this season thus far and before the season began I had the opportunity to meet some of the players. I spent a week capturing portraits of Whatcom County high school football players for the 2014 Bellingham Herald Football Preview section. I also ended up designing the cover of the special section also (you can see that above). Below you can see some of the portraits that ran inside the special section.

Photos: Bellingham Bells win the WCL Championship

I have been capturing photos of the Bellingham Bells baseball team all summer for The Bellingham Herald. Last season the team won the West Coast League Championship beating the Corvallis Knights 3-2. The Bells finish the season 41-18, the best record in Bells history and the fourth time in WCL history that a team reached 40 wins. It was a fun season to capture photos of and I learned a lot about how to capture baseball. Here’s some photos from the championship game. You can view the full photo gallery here: CLICK HERE And you can read the full story here: CLICK HERE The Bellingham Herald also put together a photo page featuring my photos from over the course of the season that you can see below.

Luke Ridnour Basketball Camp

I had the opportunity to capture photos for The Bellingham Herald of Orlando Magic point guard’s Luke Ridnour’s basketball camp in Blaine, Washington. Ridnour grew up in Blaine and has played for multiple NBA teams ranging from the Sonics (RIP) to the Minnesota Timberwolves over his 12-year career. It was fun to meet him and watch how excited the kids were to be at the camp. You can read the full story here: FULL STORY And you can view all the photos here: PHOTO GALLERY Video:

World Cup Soccer at the Copper Hog in Bellingham

The Bellingham Herald sent me to the Copper Hog to capture photos of locals watching the U.S. v. Germany World Cup soccer game Thursday morning. Over 100 people showed up at the Copper Hog to watch the game and the restaurant/bar was full of all kinds of soccer fans. Although the U.S. lost to Germany 1-0 the U.S. still moved on to the knockout round of 16, so soccer fans celebrated and continued to day drink. You can view all the photos by CLICKING HERE and read the story by Dave Gallagher by CLICKING HERE. A lone Germany soccer fan watches the U.S. v. Ski to Sea Preview: Racer portraits

I was given the task to create some portraits for the Ski to Sea special section that The Bellingham Herald puts out each year. I used a ring flash and a random wall in the basement of The Bellingham Herald building to create all of these portraits. I also had a bunch of photos from last year’s race run in the special section and will be back up on the mountain covering the cross country and downhill legs of the race again this year.

Relive the 4th of July in Whatcom County

It’s July 5th and my hand hurts from shooting so much video and photos for work and personal stuff yesterday. I started out at the Blaine’s Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration to capture the parade and car show. You can see video of both below. Pretty much quick raw edits to give you an idea of what happened. Car show video: Parade video: You can see my photos that ran in the paper below and you can see all the photos from the parade by CLICKING HERE. After that I drove back to Bellingham attended a BBQ, ate a meal of food and then went up to Sehome hill to capture the fireworks. You can see that video here and a few photos below: Now that I am done with this blog post I am off to Locust Beach to take photos of a post 4th of July beach cleanup.
