Every year Caterpillar’s reign down on trees in Washington state in the spring. This year I took the time to actually photograph some of these insects as they swarm the trees in downtown Bellingham. All photos copyright of Matt McDonald. Photos are available for print and commercial use.
I gotta say I am a big fan of Odesza and it was great to see their show sellout last night at the Wild Buffalo in Bellingham. I had a friend from out of town with me, so I wasn’t able to take more than eight photos of the show, so this is just a few photos and more or less a post saying checkout out Odesza’s music. Also, my favorite song of Odesza’s is IPlayYouListen, which I used a small sample of for the time lapse below. ODESZA is a production duo made up of Harrison Mills (Catacombkid) and Clayton Knight (BeachesBeaches) based out of the Pacific North West, United States. They met their senior year of college and decided to spend the summer as recent graduates collaborating on an album. On September 5th, 2012 they self-released a free LP entitled “Summer’s Gone”, creating a delicate balance between dreamy sun trickled melodies, glitched out vocals, crunchy drums and large sweeping basslines. Make sure to checkout Odesza at Summer Meltdown this August also. More at Odesza.com.
As a staff photographer at The Bellingham Herald I never know when I am going to get called into work. Last night I was called in to take photos of a fire off Alabama Street in Bellingham. It was an abandoned house and no one was injured, but it served as a great practice for myself for future breaking-news events. I really enjoy covering breaking news because you never know what you are getting into and trying to capture a quality photo is a challenge. For these photos I used my Cannon 5D and a 50mm lens. McKai Morgan’s threw down during his first skimboarding session back in Bellingham, Washington. McKai has been in Bozeman, Montana and hasn’t skimmed since November 2, 2012. These are just a few throw away photos we snapped from the session and a first person video using our GoPro camera from the session. The quality photos from the shoot will be displayed in the June issue of Flatland Magazine, which is an online magazine we create and manage five time a year. You can checkout the April issue here: FlatlandMag.com/2013/01/
On Saturday I decided I was going to give my new Nikon D7100 a test run with the 105mm macro lens. I setup a real basic mini-photo studio with a few flashes and ran through a bunch of different angles to attempt and capture the essence of a lemon. Here’s the photos I got. All photos copyright of Matt McDonald. All photos are available for prints and for commercial use.
On Friday May 3, 2013 I took a walk through Bloedel Donovan Park in Bellingham. I rarely go to this park, so it was worth checking out and see what I could capture. Here’s the photos from the photo walk.
Yesterday I was called out of the office to cover a fire at the Sunset Pond apartments in Bellingham. I snagged the front page photo and created a gallery and video for the BellinghamHerald.com. Read the story here: Click Here View the full photo gallery here: Click Here Watch the video here:
I have been in the process of slowly moving from Final Cut to Adobe Premiere for video editing. Last night I stayed up late and taught myself everything I need to know to make the official move. Above is the sample video I created as a test of my friend Matt and myself skimboarding (hence the video title Matt and Matt go skimboarding). The new Final Cut left a lot to desire, so the move to Premiere made sense. (Above: A self portrait of myself skimboarding)
I go skimboarding out in Bellingham Bay quite a bit and that is also home to about 10 local eagles. Over the years I swear they have let me get closer and closer to them or maybe I am just getting better at being sneaky. Regardless, here are some recent photo of bald eagles along Bellingham Bay. Take a look at all of my bald eagles photos in my bald eagle photo gallery: Click Here.
