New York City: The High Line Photos

I spent 10 days in New York and one of my favorite experiences was walking the High Line. The High Line is a 1-mile New York City linear park built on a 1.45-mile section of the elevated former New York Central Railroad spur called the West Side Line, which runs along the lower west side of Manhattan; it has been redesigned and planted as an aerial greenway. A similar project in Paris, the 3-mile Promenade plantée, completed in 1993, was the inspiration for this project. The High Line currently runs from Gansevoort Street, three blocks below West 14th Street, in the Meatpacking District, to 30th Street, through the neighborhood of Chelsea to the West Side Yard, near the Javits Convention Center. Formerly the viaduct of the High Line went as far south as Spring Street just north of Canal Street, but the lower section was demolished in 1960. Photos captured on the High Line in New York City by Matt McDonald from Bellingham, Washington. All photos are availble for prints and exclusive commercial photo use. New York City: The Subway

I have driven so little since I turned 16-years old that I have owned the same truck for 15 years and it is just about to hit 140,000 miles. I hate driving, so I was very intrigued to try the subway system in New York City. When you aren’t in a rush to get anywhere the subway is great and I would much rather watch people in a subway then be stuck in a car in traffic on a freeway. The New York City subway was pretty much what I thought it would be. People would sometimes run to the subway cars and rush into them like their life was on the line. A large majority of the time people just didn’t look that happy though. I am sure if I rode the subway everyday for years I would have fallen into the New York City routine. The only time I had to wait a significant amount of time is when one of the subway lines had a stalled train and the crowds built up quite a bit. Outside of that the New York City subway was a very efficient mode of transportation. The New York City subway is one […]

Engagement portraits with Molly and Chris in Seattle

I had the opportunity to capture engagement portraits of Molly and Chris in Seattle at the beginning of April. We went to a few different locations and it was a pretty good time to say the least. I am looking forward to being their wedding photographer in the fall. Anyways, here’s some photos from the photo session.

DB Skimboards European Tour: Denmark

I had the opportunity to travel and skimboard with DB Skimboards this summer and we ventured to Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark and Poland. Here’s some video, photos and words from our brief stay in Denmark. We had only a few hours to stay in Denmark and we found the best beach for skimboarding we could. The spot left a lot to be desired, but Friedrich and Daniel made the best of it using what they could find on the beach. Minus the naked old men it was a beautiful beach and was well worth the stop or at least we thought that until we got back to the van. As we walked back to the van we approached it and notice one of the doors was open. “We locked the doors for sure,” Dallas insisted and I ran up to the van where we could see someone broke a window and got into the van where they stole backpacks that were in the middle of the van. They didn’t have enough time to get everything, but the damage was done. They stole Dallas’s Nikon D5100, Daniels Cannon 55D, Adam and Logan’s wallets and passports, one of my credit cards, […]

Kiteboarding in Bellingham Bay

I have been checking Locust Beach on and off for a few months now when I needed to find a cutline only photo for The Bellingham Herald and Tuesday, March 25 I finally had the opportunity to try and capture some kiteboarding photos. I put on my wetsuit and grabbed to cameras and walked out as far as I could into Bellingham Bay. Patrick Harber, a Bellingham KitePaddleSurf employee, was the main person I took photos of since he was closer to the shore than the other kiteboarders. I really enjoyed capturing it and want to do it again for work and just for myself along with finally trying out kiteboarding. If I am going to stay in Bellingham there is no reason I shouldn’t be kiteboarding. You can see the full photo gallery over on BhamHerald.com by Clicking Here also.

Bellingham rain and wind

I drive around a lot looking for photos for The Bellingham Herald and over the past couple weeks I also started shooting video of random things I see. Here’s an edit I put together of some scenes of rain and wind in Bellingham to the music of Manatee Commune.

DB Skimboards European Tour: Netherlands

I had the opportunity to travel and skimboard with DB Skimboards this summer and we ventured to Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark and Poland. Here’s some video, photos and words from our first stop in Denmark. We finished up at the 2013 DB Pro/Am in Washington state, some of us slept for a few hours and some of us stayed up all night and partied. We flew out of Seattle to the Netherlands early in the morning and the whole flight was filled with the anticipation of how the DB European Skim Tour would start. “The Netherlands was an amazing place to fly into,” said Adam Balaam. “It was all super flat and loaded with farmland. As far as you could look there were grassy fields and windmills, lots of large metal windmills.” We arrived at the Amsterdam airport with our luggage and board bags and were picked up by Friedrich Fluh and his father Michael in a large Ford van. In the parking garage Friedrich greeted us all with beers. We were finally in Europe. Although we were exhausted from the flight and the contest the day before we drove straight to Adrien Raza’s hours in the Rotterdam, Netherlands, […]
